September 2017 Athletes of the Month

MENDOTA HEIGHTS – As one of the premier high school cross country meets in the United States, placing in the top ten at the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course, is considered a tremendous honor. Both Max Manley of Edina and Emily Covert of Minneapolis Washburn were able to accomplish that on September 23rd at this year’s Griak meet, with Manley finishing 6th and Covert taking the win in 1st, therefore each earning themselves the title of USATF Minnesota’s September Athlete of the Month.
Max Manley, a junior from Edina High School and the only varsity returner from last year’s state runner-up team, finished 6th as the top Minnesotan high schooler in a time of 16:38 at this year’s Griak meet. Manley has shown he is one of the top runners in the state all season, and further proved that at Griak. Manley was 38th at last year’s State Cross Country Championships and did not advance to the State Championships in Track & Field this past spring, showing just how far he has come since last year.
Emily Covert, also a junior, finished 1st in 18:13 at this year’s Griak meet getting the victory over a very deep girl’s field that included multiple nationally-ranked girls. Covert has been one of the top high school runners in Minnesota for what seems like an eternity, as she has been competing at a very high level for Minneapolis Washburn High School since 2014 when she was just a 7th grader. Covert has qualified for the State Cross Country Championships every year since 2014, finishing 8th last year, 8th in 2015, 5th in 2014, and 24th in 2013—making her a 4x All-State honoree.
Covert has also seen success on the track each spring, as she has qualified for the State Track & Field Championships every year since 2014 (her 7th grade year) as well—four times in the 3200m and one time each in the 1600m and 4x800m relay. In the process, she has collected four additional All-State honors on the track, highlighted by a 2nd place finish in the 3200m and a 3rd place finish in the 1600m at last spring’s State Championships.
Congratulations to Max and Emily and good luck the rest of the season!
