November 2018 Athletes of the Month

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - St. Michael Albertville high school girls cross country team won their first ever Minnesota state cross country team title, and Hopkins native Joe Klecker placed 8th overall at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships for the University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes, giving them both the title of November Athlete of the Month from USATF Minnesota.

The St. Michael Albertville Girls Cross Country Team won the Minnesota State Class AA team title on November 3rd at St. Olaf College with a 5 point victory over Wayzata High School, earning them the title of USATF Minnesota’s November Athletes of the Month. After a 15-point perfect score at their Section Championships (5AA), the Knights depth won them the state championship as their fifth runner was through in just 34th place. The Knights top seven runners who competed in the state meet were: Ali Weimer (Fr., 7th place, 18:01.1), Katie Sigerud (Fr., 13th, 18:19.8), Mia Salas (Sr., 21st, 18:35.3), Jessica Immer (So., 27th, 18:41.9) and Anna Belair (Jr., 34th, 18:48.5).

University of Colorado Buffalo and Hopkins native Joe Klecker placed 8th overall at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, leading his team to a 4th place podium finish and earning him the title of November Athlete of the Month from USATF Minnesota. Klecker ran in the lead pack for the entirety of the race and finished in a time of 29:15.0, securing another All-American honor for himself and giving him his highest finish at the NCAA Cross Division I Country Championships yet.

Honorable Mention Performances:
· Emily Covert of Minneapolis Washburn High School claimed her second straight class AA state title at the Minnesota state cross country meet on November 3rd in a course record time of 17:03.4.
· Acer Iverson of Roseville High School won his first class AA state title at the Minnesota state cross country meet with a time of 15:14.8, just seconds off Hassan Mead’s meet record, after finishing 2nd in 2017.
· Edina High School Boys Cross Country won their first state championship at the class AA Minnesota state cross country meet over Mounds View High School scoring 88 points.
· Grace Ping of Winona Cotter High School won the class A state championship at the Minnesota state cross country meet in a time of 17:19.4.
· Geno Uhrbom of Greenway High School won his first class A state cross country title at the Minnesota state meet in a time of 15:38.0.
· Perham High School won both the boys and girls class A team titles at the Minnesota state cross country meet scoring 64 and 94 points respectively.
· Jaret Carpenter, Purdue University and Wayzata High School, won the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Championship.
· Lucas Mueller and Emma Greenlee from Carleton University were the top Minnesotan finishers at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships finishing 17th and 44th respectively.
· University of Minnesota Women’s Cross Country finished 29th as a team at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, with top Minnesotan native in the entire field Bethany Hasz finishing 49th overall.
· Wayzata High School and Edina High School Girls Cross Country both each qualified for Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon with first and second place finishes, respectively, at the Nike Heartland Regional on November 11th.
· Mounds View High School Boys Cross Country won the team championship at the Nike Heartland Regional qualifying for Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon for the first time in school history.
